The vision for Youth Corps sprang out of the observed lack of leadership skills of the young people in our community. This need has been confirmed by a myriad of people we have talked with ranging from the private business sector to non-profit community organizations to high school teachers to college campuses.
Youth Corps is based on the conviction that high school young people need to be educated and equipped for decision-making positions in the Midlands' public, private, and independent sectors building a unified body of young people prepared for future involvement in community leadership.
The mission of Youth Corps is to provide a one-year course of practical, hands-on, on-site study and experience for 9th and 10th grade students that will provide opportunities and exposure to relevant professional competencies as an important aspect of community service.
The Youth Corps Selection Committee will select forty student applicants who show promise of leadership abilities. Applicants to the program must obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, business or community leader.
Applicants must display evidence of good judgment and the potential to affect change. Selected students will represent a diverse cross section of our community.
The cost is $975 for the entire year. Partial scholarships will be available for some participating students. Scholarships will be made available based on need and a first come, first serve basis. Payment plans are available for monthly, quarterly or yearly installments.
The Youth Corps orientation for new students takes place in May. Youth Corps participants begin the module year in August.
